FRESNO, California — Jerwin Ancajas says his championship experience isn’t such a big advantage against a fellow Filipino who is hungry for a world title.

The International Boxing Federation super-flyweight champion added that his opponent Jonas Sultan was impressive in the title eliminator against Johnriel Casimero late last year.

Ancajas and Sultan face off on Saturday at the Save Mart Center.

Defending his 115-pound title for the fifth time and having more experience inside the ring has made the 26-year-old champion the obvious favorite in the 12-round bout - the first world title fight in 93 years pitting two Filipino fighters.

But Ancajas isn’t taking Sultan lightly.

“Hindi rin dapat sobrang magkumpiyansa. Parehas kaming Filipino, at alam mo na likas sa mga Filipino ang gutom sa world championship,” said the Panabo, Davao del Norte native on Wednesday during the media workout event of the promotion held at the Heartbeat boxing gym.

“Alam naman natin ano ang nangyari nung laban niya kay Casimero. Tinalo niya na world champion rin, kaya hindi dapat tayo magkumpiyansa,” said Ancajas, fighting out of the MP (Manny Pacquiao) Promotions.

Sultan’s victory over Casimero last September automatically made him the mandatory challenger to Ancajas’ title belt.

Ancajas was the last fighter to step into the ring during the media workout.

World Boxing Organization super-flyweight champion Khalid Yafai preceded Ancajas, while before him were Sultan, Bryan Lua and Francisco Ochoa.

The Filipino title holder shadowboxed and did the mitts with trainer Joven Jimenez for one round, before he answered questions from members of the international press.

Ancajas capped his 20-minute appearance in the gym by doing some photo shoots for Top Rank Promotions.
