IBF junior bantamweight king Jerwin Ancajas puts on dominant show in front of idol Canelo Alvarez

    Nov 20, 2017

JERWIN Ancajas became an instant fan as he got the thrill of his life when middleweight champion Canelo Alvatez watched him defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight belt against Jamie Conlan.

Ancajas, 25, is an avid Canelo fan, according to trainer Joven Jimenez, that he lost no time tracking down the legendary Mexican shortly after the bout he won by way of a sixth round TKO.

"Idol talaga ni Jerwin kaya inabangan talaga po namin," said Jimenez shortly after Ancajas and his team arrived in the country Monday night from Belfast, Ireland.

"Idol ko rin po siya sir," he added of the 27-year-old Alvarez, who is coming off a 12-round draw against Gennady Golovkin.

Both Ancajas and Jimenez had a photo of themselves taken with Alvarez.

The Filipino champion didn't disappoint his idol as he made short work of the previously unbeaten Conlan before a sellout crowd at the SSE Arena in the Northern Ireland capital.

Ancajas sent the challenger down the canvass three times, the last of which courtesy of a short hook to the head that prompted the referee to stop the bout at the 52-second mark of the sixth round.

The Panabo, Davao del Norte native was leading by scores of 49-42, 49-42, and 49-41 in all three judges' scorecards when the fight was stopped.

It was the third defense of Ancajas of his 115-lbs belt this year after winning it in September of 2016 with a unanimous decision of Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo.

Jimenez said Ancajas takes a well-deserved rest for the holiday season before returning to the ring by April of next year.
