BRISBANE, Australia – Taking a lesson or two from former world champion Ricky Hatton, Jeff Horn is not about to go toe-to-toe against a puncher as deadly as Manny Pacquiao, especially in the early goings of their world title fight on Sunday.

Glenn Rushton said there’s no need for Horn to rush into a brawl against the 38-year-old opponent as what Hatton did in his memorable 2009 showdown with the boxing legend.

The proud British made the mistake of going after Pacquiao right from the get-go and suffered one of the most devastating knockouts ever in the history of prizefighting at the hands of Pacquiao.

Horn, 29, definitely is not about to make the same mistake.

“Manage the risk carefully. Adapt to the speed, adapt to the gap, adapt to the power and make sure you don’t do anything stupid. Ricky Hatton did that,” Rushton said in recalling the knockout loss of the Englishman at the hands of Pacquiao eight years ago.

“He walked in and thought he would bully him from the get-go,” he added. “He was too slow, too open, it was easy for Manny. He just stepped off the centre line and went bang. Hatton paid the price for not being respectful enough. It’s no place for a fool out there.”

Despite his problem shedding off the weight for his Sunday title fight against Pacquiao, Horn, according to Rushton, will have to make a calculated fight against a veteran and much experienced opponent.

If ever, a perfect fight plan, he said.

“It’s just a matter of staying in the moment… let’s be mistake-free,” added Rushton, who has been training the Australian since he was an 11-year-old kid.

“It’s very important in the early rounds that he doesn’t do anything foolish.”

Certainly, not against a great fighter like the Pacman.
