MANNY Pacquiao has declared that he has nothing to hide from the government, saying he is bent on clearing his name in his tax fight with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
In an interview with the GMA evening newscast 24 Oras on Tuesday night, Pacquiao said his camp is already in the process of resolving all issues over alleged tax liabilities which BIR chief Kim Henares claimed has reached P2.73 by April 2014.
Pacquiao’s tax woes with the BIR first emerged after his win over Brandon Rios in Macau last year and took the spotlight again after his win over Timothy Bradley on Sunday in a Las Vegas match where he was guaranteed a purse of US$20 million.
The 35-year-old boxing hero, however, said he is not expected to have any issues with the BIR with regards to his purse for the Bradley sight since 40 percent of his winnings will be automatically withheld by the United States’ Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Henares said Pacquiao only needs to show proof that he has already paid the tax to the IRS in order to clear him of any tax liabilities in the Philippines.
The BIR’s pursuit of Pacquiao’s taxes has prompted social media users online to create memes about the issue. One meme entitled ‘Pacquiao-Henares 2’ even showed the BIR chief in a fighting stance with the Filipino boxing superstar.
