FILIPINO lightweight Harmonito “Hammer” de la Torre remained undefeated, scoring a majority decision over Guillermo Sanchez of Puerto Rico on Friday at the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino in Niagara Falls, New York (Saturday, Manila time).
De la Torre, a General Santos City fighter in his first bout in the US, scored his 18th win, with 12 knockouts, while Sanchez dropped to 15-19-1.
Two judges scored it in favor of De la Torre at 78-74 and 77-75, while the third judge had it even at 76.
De la Torre’s manager Jim Claude “Manangquil, however, wasn’t very impressed with his ward’s performance.
“But it was a good learning experience for him. It was hard for him to recover from the jetlag and he also hurt his right hand in the fourth round,” said Manangquil.
“It’s just a slight injury.”
Sanchez started strong and tagged De la Torre with his left to keep him at bay. But De la Torre came back stronger in the next rounds to dominate the 8-round fight.
“I’m happy for the win but I know I have a lot more to improve,” said De la Torre, who will stay in Miami to train under new Cuban coach Osmiri "'Mmoro" Fernandez.
The fight was promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions and was shown live on CBS Sports Spectacular Fight Night.
