JOSIE Gabuco got the Philippines back on track in the 27th Southeast Asian Games by winning the country’s fourth gold medal in the light-flyweight class of the women's boxing competitions on Saturday at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Gabuco beat Beatrix Seguro of Indonesia via majority decision, 40-36, 40-36, 38-38, to give the boxing team its first gold in this year’s edition of the biennial meet.
But the celebration for Team Philippines was cut short as Nesthy Petecio lost in controversial fashion in the final of the women's featherweight class against New Ni of the host country.
Petecio fell against the hometown bet, 39-37, 39-37, 38-38, in a bout many thought she had won.
Gabuco’s victory somewhat eased the pain of Petecio’s loss as the world champion won her second consecutive SEA Games gold medal. She bagged the gold in the pinweight class during the 2011 staging of the meet in Indonesia.
