FREDDIE Roach wants a distraction-free training for Manny Pacquiao as he prepares for his May 2 world title fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. that even celebrities who have no business at the Wild Card gym will be barred from hanging around inside the facility.
Roach is imposing the strict policy as Pacquiao’s training camp for the mega-rich fight officially starts in the coming week.
“We have a new rule in camp. If your body isn’t doing anything, get the (expletive) out of here,” said Roach quoted in a report by KNBR.com and boxingscene.com.
The eight-time Trainer of the Year just came from Macau to supervise the corner of Zou Shiming during his failed bid to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title against Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand.
Pacquiao began training at the famed Los Angeles boxing gym last week with strength and conditioning coach Justine Fortune the one in-charge.
Under the new policy, Roach said even celebrities have not been spared as actor/comedian Dave Chappelle was recently ‘kicked out’ of the Wild Card.
“I kicked out Dave Chappelle and his family. I felt bad about it,” said Roach.
Pacquiao’s long-time trainer said the Filipino southpaw has been so focused in training for the Mayweather fight that he has approved of the new gym rule.
“We had a good workout, and I told him ‘Isn’t it nice this way?’ And he just looked at me. I know he would rather have his friends around, but he knows what we have to do,” said Roach.
