FREDDIE Roach has just began training Manny Pacquiao for his welterweight title fight against Jeff Horn, but the Hall of Fame trainer already liked what he initially saw.
Roach was left impressed with the current condition of the 38-year-old Filipino ring icon after finally taking charge of his training camp Monday at the Elorde gym at the Five E-Com Building near the Mall of Asia.
The 57-year-old Roach arrived in the country with strength and conditioning coach Justine Fortune on Sunday night, about two weeks since Pacquiao began his own training for his July 2 fight under local trainers Buboy and Haplas Fernandez and Nonoy Neri.
Roach gave Pacquiao’s current condition a thumbs-up, especially now that the sparring part of the camp has began.
“Happy si coach Freddie sa kanyang nakita,” said Haplas Fernandez after Pacquiao's afternoon workout. “Kumbaga sa manok, na-pointing na siya (Pacquiao)."
The reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion did his morning jog to start the day, and then went 12 rounds in the mitts in his first training under Roach.
“Yung mga kamay na ni coach Freddie ang sumakit (kanina),” Fernandez added.
The Filipino senator already began sparring last weekend when he went two rounds each with Filipino sparmates Leonardo Doronio and Sonny Katian Dagho.
Doronio was the same sparring partner Pacquiao had when he challenged Jessie Vargas last November for the WBO version of the 147-lbs. title belt.
