IT’S all about the beaches and nothing to do with boxing.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is making a surprise visit to the country of former rival Manny Pacquiao to explore its 'natural wonders and beauty' and enjoy its world-famous beaches.
The 41-year-old retired boxing champion and promoter is set to arrive in Manila on Monday night on board a private plane from Bangkok, Thailand.
“I have heard and seen on TV how beautiful the Philippines is and I can’t wait to see for myself,” said Mayweather in a statement made through Sam Versoza of Frontrow International, which will host the ‘Money Team’ during its stay here.
“I am looking forward for some relaxation, time with family and friends, and experience how you guys throw a party for the ‘Money Team.’
Mayweather will forever be linked with Pacquiao after the two engaged in the single richest fight in boxing history in May 2015 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which raked in $72.1 million in ticket sales and 4.6 million sales on pay-per-view. The American fighter scored a 12-round unanimous decision over Pacquiao to wrest the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title belt.
He came out of retirement last year to fight mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar and UFC champion Conor McGregor in a celebrated 12-round match, which Mayweather won via a 10th-round knockout and brought his perfect record to 50 and 0.
Mayweather has not fought since then and for the past week, had been on a tour that took him to countries such as Dubai, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand.
His decision to have a stopover in the Philippines also has something to do with a couple of Filipino personnel in his staff, including personal assistant Marikit ‘Kitchie’ Laurico and videographer James Dayap.
There’s no mention though, whether Mayweather will get to meet Pacquiao even for a brief moment, the 39-year-old ring great being a Senator of the Philippines.
Versoza for his part, is just happy and pleased to host one of the greatest boxers of his era even for just a few days.
“It is a privilege to be his host during his vacation,” said Versoza, whose company is considered the country’s No.1 health and wellness, multilevel marketing firm which was responsible for bringing to the country the hosting of the 2017 Miss Universe.
