Floyd Mayweather says he'll fight Pacquiao again

Mayweather says he'll fight Pacquiao again after chance meeting in Japan
    Sep 15, 2018

FLOYD Mayweather said he is coming out of retirement to fight Manny Pacquiao again, most likely in December.

The unbeaten boxing great made the statement on Saturday in a video posted on Instagram, where he is seen with Pacquiao and their respective entourage during a chance meeting at the Ultra Japan electronic music festival in Tokyo.

"I'm coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year another 9 figure pay day on the way," the American fighter said in the caption.

The two icons first fought in 2015 in the highest-grossing fight in the sport's history but turned out to be largely underwhelming as Mayweather won via lopsided decision.

Pacquiao later claimed he injured his shoulder weeks before the fight.

"Now we're going to take the belt, we're goin' to get the payday and now, no shoulder excuses," Mayweather said in another video posted on YouTube where he is seen with matchmaker Sean Gibbons.

If the grudge match pushes through, Mayweather, unbeaten in 50 fights, will be 41 and inactive since beating MMA superstar Connon McGregor last August 26, 2017.

On the other hand, Pacquiao has been more active since and is coming off an impressive stoppage win over Lucas Matthysse last July. He will turn 40 on December 17.

The first fight took years to put together, but a rematch should be easier to make with Pacquiao now claiming he is no longer under contract with Top Rank of Bob Arum, who has never seen eye to eye with former ward Mayweather.

Just days ago, Pacquiao threatened to sue Top Rank claiming unpaid fees from the broadcast rights to the Matthysse fight.

Pacquiao, who was in the company of staffer Joe Ramos and assistant trainer Haplas Fernandez, was heard telling Mayweather that ‘he has the belt,’ obviously referring to the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight crown he won last July following a seventh-round stoppage of Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur.

But Mayweather replied, “I want no shoulder excuses,” as he tried to mock the Filipino boxing great, who soon turned away.

Pacquiao, who was reportedly paid $250,000 for his appearance in the event, had earlier said he’s set to make a ring return this December against an opponent still to be named in a venue yet to be determined.

Mayweather came out of a two-year retirement to beat McGregor in a fight that earned $55.4 million in ticket sales and lured 4.3 million pay-per-view units.

But it was his showdown with Pacquiao which turned out to be the biggest of his career, earning a $200 million prized purse, $72.1 million in ticket sales, and a record 4.6 million pay-per-view units.

Mayweather’s 50-0 record however, has recently been surpassed by Thai Wanheng Menayothin, whose unanimous decision win over Filipino Pedro Taduran last month improved his mark to 51-0 (18 KOs) as he retained the World Boxing Council (WBC) mini-flyweight crown.

Pacquiao later joined the fun, posting a video on Twitter with the caption: '50-1.'
