MICHAEL Fareñas capped the inaugural event of MAG Pacman Boxing International Promotions with an emphatic second round technical knockout over Jesus Rios of Mexico at the Solaire Resort and Casino late Friday.
The end came at the 2:40 mark of the second round as Rios got up from the second knockdown he suffered. The Mexican managed to beat the count but his shaky demeanor gave the referee more than enough reason to stop the fight.
“Gusto ko talaga ng knockout na panalo para matuwa `yung mga tao at `yung promoter ko,” Fareñas said after the fight backed by Tobi, Boysen, CherrylumE, Siscor Mechanical Fabricators and Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza-Baguio City.
“Naramdaman ko na kaya ko naman `yung suntok niya kaya sinugod ko na.”
Fareñas measured up his opponent in the first round. Confident he had Rios all figured out, the Filipino veteran threw combinations for two knockdowns that ended the night.
With the win, he is hopeful that his next fight will be for a world title, preferably against World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia.
In the co-main event, Dodie Boy Peñalosa Jr. kept his undefeated record with a technical decision victory over Alem Robles.
The Mexican was a tough customer for the young Penalosa but he did more than enough to claim the victory.
“I’m happy with his performance,” Gerry Peñalosa said about his nephew. “I wanted to see him in that kind of situation.”
In the undercard, Richard Pumicpic defeated another Mexican Luis Lugo via unanimous decision in an action packed fight. Pumicpic was the aggressor throughout the fight, convincing the judges to score the bout in his favor.
