LOS ANGELES – Floyd Mayweather doesn’t have the monopoly of the word ‘Money’ in his name.
Manny Pacquiao on Sunday once again showed his generous side after giving away P6.5 million during the final weigh-in for the novelty ‘B-Side Weight Competition’ involving members of the Filipino boxing icon’s team.
Former boxer Arnel Pontanilla emerged the winner in the men’s division, while Kharzma Tan emerged winner in the distaff side at the end of the three-week weight-loss contest.
The winners were richer by US$12,000 (P528,000) as the champion gets the automatic cash prize of $10,000, plus an additional $2,000 for shedding 15 percent of their weight prior to the contest, as per contest rules.
“Last two days, mansanas na lang kinakain ko pero dinudura ko rin para lang may panlasa ako,” Pontanilla, who lost more than 21 pounds, said afterwards.
Runner-up finishers (men and women) received $7,000 and $5,000, respectively.
Those who managed to lose at least 15 percent of their original weight also got $2,000 as consolation prize. Among them was former world title challenger Diosdado Gabi (30-4-1, 21 KOs).
A total of 63 competitors made it to the final weigh-in out of the original contestants of 134. Out of the 63, about four or five reportedly failed to make the weight.
In all, an estimated P6.688 million in cash prizes were handed out by the 36-year-old Pacquiao in the latest edition of the contest he started prior to his fight against the great Oscar Dela Hoya in 2008.
Pacquiao thought about holding the contest as his way of promoting physical fitness among members of his entourage while letting them feel and understand what he goes through when training for a fight.
