JUAN Miguel Elorde tries to carve his own boxing niche when he vies in his first ever world title fight this Sunday (Manila time), more than half a century since his legendary grandfather became a celebrated world champion himself.

The 32-year-old grandson of Hall of Famer and Filipino boxing great Gabriel ‘Flash’ Elorde challenges reigning champion Emanuel Navarrete of Mexico for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight crown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 12-round bout, serving as one of the undercards in the Tyson Fury-Otto Wallin heavyweight showdown, is definitely the biggest in the 11-year career of Elorde, son of former amateur boxer and promoter Johnny and Lisa Elorde.

The young Elorde didn’t start to box as a pro until graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management at the College of St. Benilde.

His shot at the WBO 122-lbs title makes him the first direct descendant of the Elordes to vie for the world championship, 59 years after the family’s great grand patriarch KO’d Harold Gomes to win the world super-featherweight crown before a delirious crowd at the newly-opened Araneta Coliseum in March of 1960.

Elorde’s camp is already in Las Vegas for fight week after holding half of his training camp in Los Angeles, California at the Combinations Boxing Academy of Filipino trainer Marvin Somodio.

The young Elorde is accompanied by his family, along with brother Juan Martin ‘Bai’ Elorde, who himself is a professional fighter. Another brother Nico Elorde, however, failed to go with them as he’s currently preparing with the rest of the NorthPort Batang Pier for the coming PBA Governors Cup.

Trainer Toto Laurente however, failed to tag along following some snafu with his visa application, paving the way for Somodio to work on Elorde’s corner.

Elorde totes a 28-1 record with 15 KOs. He is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision over Shohei Kawashima in Paranaque City last March.

But the Filipino challenger is in for a tough fight.

Only 24, the hard-punching Navarrete has an impressive record of 28-1 with 24 KOs.

The Mexican is coming off a third-round TKO of Francisco De Vaca just three weeks ago in Los Angeles, California.

Navarrete hardly worked a sweat in his last fight that his handlers decided to stake his crown on the line in just a month’s time against Elorde.

He won the WBO crown by dethroning former champion Isaac Dogboe with a unanimous decision victory in December last year.
