DRIAN Francisco failed in his upset bid against unbeaten former world super-bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, losing a 10-round unanimous decision in the undercard of the Miguel Coto-Canelo Alvarez middleweight championship match at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
The unexciting Cuban won on scores of 100-90, 100-90, 97-93.
It was the first fight for Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, in about a year and the crowd was in no way elated with his return as the Cuban was jeered and mocked for his slow and boring fighting-style.
Rigondeaux fought a dominant but tactical fight against the Filipino, a last-minute pick to face the same fighter who dethroned Nonito Donaire Jr. in their super-bantamweight title fight in 2013.
The Cuban improved to 16-0 with 10 KOs, while Francisco lost for the second time this year and fell to a 28-4-1 record with 22 KOs.
