NONITO DONAIRE won his unification title bout over Jeffrey Mathebula on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time)to add the South African's IBF title to the WBO super-bantamweight title the Filipino already holds.
Donaire won it by scores of 119-108 (Deon Duarte), 117-110 (Jonathan Davis), and 118-109 (Steve Morrow).
He scored the fight’s lone knockdown, sending Mathebula down the canvass with a solid left just as round four of the scheduled 12-round bout was about to end.
The win by the 29-year-old California-based Filipino put him in line for a possible shot against Abner Mares or Guillermo Rigondeaux, the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) super-bantamweight title holders, respectively, in his bid to become the undisputed champion in the division.
Donaire improved to 29-1 with 18 KOs, while Mathebula fell to 26-4-2 (14 KOs)
