FRESNO, California – It’s Chris Newsome’s turn to show some love for Jerwin Ancajas.

The Meralco guard wished Ancajas good luck in his title fight on Saturday as the world champion battles Jonas Sultan for the world super-flyweight title.

“I wish the best of luck to my idol Jerwin and hope to see him again soon,” said Newsome in a personal message sent to SPIN.ph from Manila on the eve of the bout at the Save Mart Center here.

The move was Newsome’s way of reciprocating the gesture given him by the International Boxing Federation title holder three months ago when he personally watched the third year guard at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan during the PBA Philippine Cup game between the Bolts and Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Ancajas was then fresh from a 10th round stoppage of Israel Gonzalez to retain his crown in an impressive US debut.

The 26-year-old champion is a Magnolia fan and has Tim Cone as his favorite coach, but said he has been following Newsome’s career even way back during his college days at Ateneo.

Ancajas, along with trainer-manager Joven Jimenez, was later given access to the Bolts’ dugout following their 84-82 win.

As gratitude, Newsome quickly gave Ancajas his no. 11 playing jersey, which ‘Pretty Boy’ proudly wore for everyone to see.

“Meeting Jerwin was a great honor, and to be sought out by him is just something that I can’t even really put in words,” said Newsome in recalling his meeting with the soft-spoken fighter.

Now, Newsome is taking things to an even higher level especially with Ancajas facing Sultan in a fight of historic magnitude.

Not to down Sultan, but Newsome made known who will he be rooting for in the first ever all-Filipino world title fight in almost a century.

“I definitely admire his (Ancajas) tenacity and approach in how he prepares himself for a fight. And of course, his humility for not letting success change the person he truly is,” said the former Rookie of the Year.

“Even though this fight has two Filipinos in it, ever since that meeting in the dugout, I’ve definitely been in his corner.”
