ALTOUGH Chris Algieri has declared he would not “trade bombs” with Manny Pacquiao, trainer Freddie Roach says he has plans to draw the New Yorker into a more exciting fight with the Filipino boxing icon.
“I am expecting him to move on us and try to outbox us. We’ll try to make it exciting, we’re gonna cut the ring off, we’re gonna set traps,” said Roach.
“We’re well prepared for his style and we’re not gonna make this a boring fight. No,” he said. “If you get him in position and you start exchanging with him. He will fight back. He is brave. He has guts.”
“And that’s something we’ll get him into, exchanges. And that’s gonna help us in the fight!”
Roach also downplayed Algieri’s knockout power, saying the 30-year-old undefeated American “has nothing in his punches.”
“Knock-out Manny? With the power that he has no? C’mon. There’s no stoppage for him in this fight,” said Roach.
Algieri’s trainer Tim Lane meanwhile claimed his ward is ready to engage whatever Pacquiao will offer in the fight.
“I think a lot of people underestimate Chris’ power. Anything could happen in the ring,” said Lane.
The youthful cornerman also said that they carefully studied Pacquiao’s movements in their four-month training camp.
“Manny is hard to hit clean and anything can happen in the ring, but I do believe that Chris will find him,” Lane said.
“We’re gonna go out there and win every round. And Chris is gonna give his best performance,” he added.
Lane also notes that Algieri needs this win because it is his ticket to a bigger paycheck in the future.
“This is definitely a make or break ticket (to fame). We’re here to win and Chris Algieri is one hundred percent prepared,” Lane declared.
Asked about the US$1.5 million paycheck of Algieri against the $23-million of Pacquiao, Lane expressed no disappointment.
“Actually I talked to Chris regarding that. And I told him, we should in fact be very happy that we are in this fight,” said Lane.
“In fact, I told him, we just need to win the fight, shock the world… same way Pacquiao did 15 years ago,” added Algieri’s former kickboxing sparring partner.
