BRISBANE, Australia – Buboy Fernandez is not about to get carried away with claims by the camp of Jeff Horn about his last-minute weight problem heading to Sunday’s showdown with the great Manny Pacquiao.
The long-time buddy and trainer of the Filipino boxing icon said the allegation could just be a mere ploy to deceive Pacquiao and his team, and eventually, let their guard down.
Fernandez said Pacquiao just minds his own business and nothing else.
“Sa tinagal-tagal ko sa boksing, hindi na tayo dapat magpadala sa mga ganyan. Baka strategy lang nila yan,” said Fernandez on Friday, in a rare moment that he gets to take the day-off as the boxing champion is finally through with his training camp, less than 48 hours before taking on his 29-year-old challenger for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title.
“Panahon pa ni McArthur, sinasabi na yung mga ganyan,” added Fernandez, who has been in Pacquiao’s corner since the Filipino senator turned pro in 1995.
On the eve of the weigh-in, Horn admitted still being above the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. The fight’s official weigh-in is set early Saturday morning at the Suncorp stadium.
Horn showed up at the Boxing Royalty Luncheon at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre Friday weighing 69.9 kilos or 153.7 lbs. He didn’t bother to go up on stage and join boxing luminaries led by former world champion Roberto Duran, who were honored during the gala.
The challenger said he had eaten nothing for the day and plans to just have a couple of sip of water as he struggles to go down in weight.
Horn admitted in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald that it was the first time ‘I’ve seen the 69-kilo mark for a while.’
In contrast with Horn, Pacquiao, 38, has no problem as far as his weight is concerned, The eight-time world division champion even has the luxury to eat meals five times a day and still don’t go overboard the limit.
He currently weighs in at 142, although trainer Freddie Roach wants him to tip in at either 145 or 146 during the weigh-in.
“Walang problem sa timbang ni brod. Nakakakain siya ng maayos,” said Fernandez.
Except for an hour morning run at the Botanical Garden, Pacquiao, gunning for his 60th career win (59-6-3, 38 KOs) didn’t do any physical activities relating to his title fight.
“Wala na namang gagawin e,” said Fernandez. “Wala nang dapat pang idagdag.”
