Boxer Gabuco leads recipients as national athletes awarded scholarships by STI

    Nov 20, 2013

STI Foundation formally awarded scholarships to deserving members of the national team during a simple courtesy call on Thursday at the STI Academic Center in Cainta, Rizal.

The partnership between the Philippine Sports Commission and the STI Foundation, aptly called the 'Gift of Knowledge Program,' aims to provide deserving national athletes the means to attain a college degree by granting them full scholarships for courses of their choice.

Twenty-four athletes received their scholarship papers from STI Foundation head Connie Andrada-Sablay and were reminded that “this is a privilege you can choose to maximize or take for granted. Education is a fall-back for you after your days as an athlete.”

SEA Games gold medalist Josie Gabuco is among the scholarship recipients. Although still in Baguio City training for her forthcoming stint in the Myanmar Southeast Asian Games this December, she expressed excitement that she can attend school without worrying about her tuition fees.

The other 15 national athletes from different sports and eight PSC employees who also received scholarship grants expressed gratitude to the STI Foundation for their support and interest in helping them secure their future through education.

STI Foundation, through its president Monico V. Jacob, signed a memorandum of agreement with PSC Chairman Ricardo R. Garcia early this year granting P10 million worth of scholarships which can be availed by national athletes, with a small percentage allotted for PSC employees.

Interested athletes have already submitted their application documents to qualify for a scholarship for the next school year.

PSC commissioner Iggy Clavecilla, who helped revive the national sports agency’s tie-up with STI, is optimistic that more elite athletes will avail of these scholarships. “Education is the best gift we can give to our youth,” he said.
