ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Gensan's Roldan Boncales, who came in as a substitute for injured Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar celebrated opening day of the AIBA World Elite Men's Championships at the modern Baluan Sholak Palace of Sports with an upset of Beijing Olympian Eddie Barillas of Guatemala in their flyweight (52 kg.) match here.
Boncales, the second of five children of a tricycle driver in Pacquiao-town, used quick in-and-out moves to frustrate his opponent who was 10 years his senior.
"Medyo magulang siya at malakas manuntok pero ginawa ko lang ang laro ko", (he tried to use one upmanship but I just played my game) said the 20 year-old who got into the PLDT-ABAP team only last year. He earned all three judges' (from Ukraine, Hungary and Finland) nod, 30-27 (twice) and 29-28.
In his first international stint January 2013, he won the gold medal in the Kuala Lumpur City Day Cup where he was also adjudged the tournament's "Boxer with Most Potential".
His next opponent is North Korea's Ri Chung Il, who recently won the gold medal in the Korotkov Memorial Tournament in Khabarovsk, Russia.
Tuesday, the second Filipino to see action is light welterweight (64 kg.) Dennis Galvan of Bago City. He takes on tournament 10th seed Gaybatullah Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan.
