BAGO CITY – Four hometown bets and three each from Tagbilaran and Northern Samar led the charge of emerging stars on Wednesday as close to 80 boxers from fight clubs and teams all over the region showed their wares two days into the PLDT-Abap Visayas Area Tournament.
Lemwil Javines (50kgs) defeated Jude Ryan Daag, 15-7, Raymard Flores (49 kgs) edged Sagay City’s Aljun Oro, 16-14; Mario Jaga (46 kgs) nipped Jeffrey Stella of Mandaue City, 14-10; and Argie Alabado (52 kgs) stopped Joseph Carino of Dumaguete City (RSC/Rnd 1) to lead Bago City’s charge.
Tagbilaran, meanwhile, showcased Orville King Olaivar (46 kgs), who downed Dumaguete’s Daryl Victorino, 10-5, before returning to beat Northern Samar’s Dick Espinola. Later Kenneth Paul Gentallan (46kgs) survived Bago City’s Lemwil Javines, 13-12.
Carrying North Samar’s colors, Espinola (46 kgs) halted Cabatuan, Iloilo’s Christian Mayo in the third round; Paul Sacupon (46 kgs) routed Bago City’s Wenfredo Victoriano, 31-10; and Jusua Sambajon (52 kgs) stopped Himamaylan’s Gemson delos Santos in the first round.
Other Day 1 bouts saw Himamaylan’s Mark Anthony Montinola (48kgs) nudging Bago City’s Adrian Tambanillo, 18-17; Mandaue City's Hipolito Banal shutting down Cabatuan, Iloilo’s Lloyd Moscardon, 10-0; Mandaue’s Alemar Javier (52) battering to submission in the first round Cabatuan, Iloilo’s Nicky Bhetco; Negros Oriental’s Milwin Anthony Ramirez (53 kgs) besting Mandaue’s Bryan Laden before edging Bryan Paden out of Mandaue City, 11-8; Bacolod’s Alvin Sibugan (49 kgs) crushing Negros’ Romero Algen, 2010; Sta. Catalina’s Minard Gana-an (49 kgs) dumping Dumaguete’s Jay Solomin in impressive fashion, 37-18.
In another Day Two bout, Dumaguete’s Chaim Pascual (50 kgs) defeated Sipalay City’s Albino Tihuk Jr., 11-7.
