MACAU – The camp of Chris Algieri was quick to dismiss the undefeated American boxer's struggle to make the weight for his welterweight title fight against Manny Pacquiao.
The 30-year-old challenger didn’t make the catch weight of 144 lbs. until his third attempt when he officially came in at 143.6 lbs after about 50 minutes of shedding off the extra poundage during the official weigh-in for the match early Saturday morning at the Cotai Arena here.
Algieri initially weighed in at 144.4 lbs and was forced to strip naked in an effort to make weight. He still came out overweight at 144.2 and was given a two hour reprieve to get rid of the excess weight.
In contrast, Pacquiao was at a trim 143.8 lbs.
Trainer Keith Trimble also downplayed the incident, saying no way did Algieri struggle dropping weight despite early reports the unbeaten fighter (20-0, 8 KOs) had problem trimming down while in training camp.
“Freddie (Roach) said Chris was dehydrated. If I were him, I’d be wishing the same. Freddie thought Chris was dehydrated when he looked like superman to me,” he said
Tim Lane, Algieri’s main trainer, said the native of Huntington, New York was never beyond 144 lbs prior to the weigh in.
“We had two scales upstairs. One said he was 143 at the dime, and the others said he was 143.8. So we thought we were where we wanted to be,” he said.
Confident that he won’t have a problem with making weight that Algieri even had breakfast of oat meal, coffee, and fruits.
“Id’ rather be fed than withdrawn or sucked off,” he said afterwards.
