THE Philippine International Open 2019 Tenpin Bowling Championships got going on Saturday at the Coronado Lanes in Mandaluyong City.
The third edition of the tournament also serving as a test event for the country’s hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games runs until June 16.
The international field includes national teams SEA Games countries, according to Philippine Bowling Federation (PBF) secretary general Olivia ‘Bong’ Coo
“Napakasignificant ng event na ‘to because it’s a test event for the SEA Games not only for the organizers na kami magpapatakbo but also for the players. Dito natin maga-gauge ‘yung kakayahan at skills nila. The national team of our neighboring countries are coming,” said Coo, a four-time world champion during her playing days.
Among the countries that will see action are Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. The event also features bowlers from India, United Arab Emirates, Guam and Australia.
“The competition will be tough because the best of the best in Southeast Asia will be here,” said Coo.
Nine gold medals will be at stake in the competition with the men’s and women’s singles, doubles, masters, and team of four, and mixed doubles.
Among the Philippine national team members seeing action are Kenneth Chua, Frederick Go, Raoul Miranda, Merwin Tan, Kenzo Umali, Kayle Abad, Patrick Nuqui, Paolo Valdez, Enzo Hernandez, Liza del Rosario, Alexis Sy, Dyan Coronacion, Lara Posadas, Rachel Leon and Bea Hernandez.
Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Ricky Vargas attended the opening ceremony on Saturday of the competition also backed by Pagcor, Philippine Sports Commission, Café Puro, Boysen, Prima Pasta, Linden Suites, and the MVP Sports Foundation.
“I congratulate the PBF and our bowling heroes for bringing the sport for what it is today. During my younger years, bowling was the number one sport that brought glory to this country. When our bowlers compete against the best of Southeast Asia in the SEA Games, this will be our shining glory. Let’s cheer them to win the gold,” said Vargas.
“PBF is the recognized NSA (national sports association) for bowling in the country. We will witness bowling performance to the highest level throughout this tournament,” said PBF president Steve Robles.
Former International Boxing Federation president and long-time bowling official Steve Hontiveros and PBF treasurer Alex Lim also graced the affair.
