KENNETH Chua took first place in the preliminary round of the men’s open category of the Philippine International Open (PIO) Tenpin Bowling Championships at the Coronado Lanes in Starmall Mandaluyong.

Chua rolled 1483 pinfalls after two games in the preliminaries to emerge as the toughest challenger to titleholder Sam Cooley of Australia.

The 27-year-old four-time bowler of the year showed consistent form as he had 743 in the first game and 740 in the second.

“We have to maintain our focus and remain consistent until the finals for us Filipino bowlers to have a chance for the title,” said Chua, silver medalist in the men’s singles of the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Kenzo Umali (1433) and Merwin Tan (1426) are second and third in the local division.

With Cooley already seeded in the final, Timothy Than of Singapore (1441), Basil Ng (1406), and Abdulla Ali of Bahrain (1403) are the top three for the foreign bets.

Muhd Jaris Goh also rolled a perfect game in the competition organized by the Philippine Bowling Federation, the national sports association recognized by the World Bowling and the Philippine Olympic Committee, and backed by Pagcor, Cafe Puro, Prima Pasta, MVP Sports Foundation, Boysen Paints, Linden Suites and the Philippine Sports Commission.
