Warriors rally in second half to defeat Pirates

    May 22, 2013

UNIVERSITY of the East recovered just in time in the second half to beat Lyceum, 82-72, on Wednesday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

The Red Warriors trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter but rallied to steal the win and improve their record to 5-2.

“We have to understand that 'yung mga tinatanim natin, hindi agad magbubunga,” said UE coach Boyzie Zamar, whose team came back from a 37-48 deficit in the third. “We are sowing seeds. I agree that it’s an ugly win but we will take it from here.”

However, Zamar said that he doesn’t expect his team to win against La Salle on Saturday if the Red Warriors play like they did against the Pirates.

“They should be ready. If they play like this, pupulutin kami sa kangkungan. We can’t rely on individual power. It’s all about team,” said Zamar.

Roi Sumang finished with 19 points, while Cameroonian reinforcement Charles Mammie had 14 points and 15 rebounds.

The Red Warriors took control with a 24-2 run that bridged through the third and fourth quarters. Mammie hit back-to-back baskets to pull UE to a 61-50 advantage.

Lyceum remained winless in five tries.

In the juniors division, San Sebastian won 79-59, handing Ateneo its first loss in four games. The Staglets improved to 4-1 in Group B.

Mapua-Malayan defeated Perpetual Help, 85-74. The Red Robins won their third win in five games, while the Altalettes are winless in five outings.
