ELMER Haya is the lone Filipino left in the WPA World 9-Ball Championship after reaching the semifinals on Thursday in Doha.
The unheralded Pinoy cue artist defeated compatriot Johann Chua, 11-7, in the quarterfinals to advance to the Final Four where he will face Neils Feijen of The Netherlands.
En route to the Final Four, Haya defeated another Filipino in Raymund Faraon, 11-8, in the round-of-16 before dispatching Hijika Hayoto of Japan, 11-8, to stay alive in his bid for the US$30,000 top prize.
Haya’s win salvaged the hopes of the Philippines after last year’s runner-up Antonio Gabica was eliminated by Albin Ouschan of Austria, 11-10, in the Final 16.
Feijen eliminated world No. 2 Carlo Biado, 11-7, to reach the semifinal round where he will meet Haya.
Ouschan, brother of women’s billiards player Jasmin, will take on Chang Yu-lun of Chinese Taipei in the other semifinal pairing.
Ouschan defeated Li He Wen of China, 11-8, while Chang down Shane Van Boening of the United States, 11-8.
