    May 18, 2013

UNIVERSITY of the East regained its shooting touch following a woeful showing in its last outing, beating UAAP runner-up University of Santo Tomas, 85-68, on Saturday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Ralf Olivarez and Jay-ar Sumido were perfect from the field, while Roi Sumang led a crippling third quarter run, and the Red Warriors claimed solo third in Group B with a 4-2 win-loss slate.

Olivarez had 17 points as he made all seven shots from the field and three from the free throw line. Sumido, meanwhile, connected on all four triples and finished with 16 points.

Sumang added 15 points and buried five straight baskets to foil a UST run, giving UE a 66-56 lead at the end of the third period.

UE won after shooting just 22-of-76 from the field in its 76-64 victory over Letran on Wednesday. Against UST, the Red Warriors improved and made 34 of their 66 field goal attempts.

The Red Warriors held off the Tigers, who stormed back in the third and cut their deficit to 59-56 near the end of the quarter.

UE continued to pounce in the fourth and led, 83-62, on a triple by Chris Javier.

“UST is a finalist,” said UE coach Boyzie Zamar. “Tambakan nila kami ng bente o 30, babalik at babalik ’yan. You saw it. We had to keep reminding them and rotating the players as much as possible.”

Javier added 13 points while Adrian Santos had 10 points and 15 rebounds for UE.

Aljon Mariano and Jeric Teng had 15 and 13 points each for the Tigers, who also got 10 points from Tata Bautista.
