RONNIE Alacano defeated Robb Saez, 11-7, in the finale on Friday night (Saturday Manila time) to complete his amazing run from the losers' bracket in the Championship Cloth Pro Classic 9-Ball Tournament in Louisiana.
`The Volcano' staved off an opening-day loss by sweeping all his remaining matches - including his showdown with Saez in the finals - to take home the US$3,300 top prize.
The former world 9-ball champion broke out of a tight 5-5 contest and never looked back for the win.
Alcano finally took control after Saez failed to make a shot following a 5-7 combination in the 11th rack.
The Filipino was on the verge of elimination after losing to Hunter Lombardo, 9-2, in the opener. But he notched successive victories over the likes of compatriot Francisco “Django” Bustamante and American Shane Van Boening.
Interestingly, it was Van Boening who funded Alcano’s trip to the tournament.
The lanky billiard star also beat fellow Filipino Israel Rota, Mike Davis, Wang Can, Ralph Eckert, and Charlie WiIlliams en route to the finals.
Bustamante and Warren Kiamco finished fifth in the tournament to win US$900 each, while Rota placed ninth for a $325 payout.
