ANTHONY Semerad scored 22 points, going 4-of-4 from three-point range, as San Beda downed National University, 88-81, on Wednesday to reach the semifinals of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Semerad had 19 points in the second half as the fourth-ranked Red Lions seized control after a third-quarter run.
Baser Amer had 17 points, while Ola Adeogun added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Red Lions, who used a 14-3 blast in the third quarter to break a 48-48 deadlock in the third.
“Credit to all the players who played in the second half,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez. “They really stepped up on their defense.”
The Red Lions will take on Mendiola neighbour and top-seed Centro Escolar University in the semifinals on Friday.
Semerad scored five points in a run that gave San Beda a 62-51 lead. He scored six, including a triple, that made it 78-69 with 4:17 remaining in the fourth.
NU cut the deficit to three points on a Troy Rosario triple, 84-81, with 53.8 seconds left but missed its shots in the final moments as San Beda closed the game by scoring four free throws.
“We have to be ready for our press break. That’s when NU came back because we committed turnovers,” said Fernandez.
Alfred Aroga scored 22 points, while Rosario added 14 as the Bulldogs got eliminated after losing just one game in the preliminaries.
