San Beda had a game plan against JRU star Teytey Teodoro - and executed it to perfection

    Jun 23, 2017

SAN Beda coach Boyet Fernandez admitted putting the clamps on Teytey Teodoro was the key to the Red Lions' win over Jose Rizal University in the Filoil Cup preseason semifinals on Friday.

Teodoro was limited to nine points on 4-of-13 shooting, just days after his 26-point performance against Adamson in the quarterfinals, as the Red Lions put away an 80-64 victory to gain a place in the finals.

"It's really a motivation for us," said Fernandez of stopping Teodoro, who just days earlier was described by JRU coach Vergel Meneses as 'close to unstoppable.'

"But come to think of it, if we cannot stop Teytey, we cannot stop JRU."

Meneses agreed San Beda did a good job of defending Teodoro, but insisted it was the other JRU players' inability to knock down the open shots each time Teodoro was trapped that did the Bombers in.

"Na-depensahan din si Teytey ... Tapos kapag pick and roll, tinatrap talaga siya. 'Yun din gusto naming mangyari, but the problem is we couldn't hit our outside shots," said Meneses.

Fernandez said San Beda also made it a point to stop JRU's other gunners.

"If we can limit Teytey below 10 points, it will be good for us. Remember, Teytey is averaging close to 14 or 16 points per game," he said.

"If we can limit him and try to manage (Jed) Mendoza, who is playing well right now, and (Ervin) Grospe, try to limit Teodoro, then we have a good chance of winning," said Fernandez.
