ROBERTO Gomez advanced to the round-of-16 of the 2021 World Pool Championships, defeating Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp, 11-7, on Tuesday in Milton Keynes, England.
Gomez arranged a duel with giant-killer Skyler Woodward of the United States in the next round for a place in the quarterfinals set late Wednesday night on the TV table.
Woodward defeated reigning champion Fedor Gorst, 11-8, in the last 32 to clinch a spot in the next phase of the tournament with a $250,000 prize fund.
Gomez, runner-up in the 2007 World Pool Championships, began the tournament with a 9-8 win over Stewart Colclough of England, 9-8, to clinch a berth in the knockout stage.
The Filipino cue artist won over 9-7 victory over Albin Ouschan, then routed Muhummed Daydat, 11-2, to stay in the hunt for the title and the $50,000 top prize.
Jeff De Luna, the other Pinoy in the competition, was already eliminated, missing the knockout phase after defeats against Dimitri Jungo, 9-5, and Jasmin Ouschan, 9-5.
