    Oct 28, 2012

DENNIS Orcollo of the Philippines failed to sustain his momentum and fell to Shane Van Boening as he settled for a runner-up finish in the 37th US Open Championship on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach-Norfolk Convention Center in Virginia.

The Filipino lost to the American champion in the race-to-13 finals, 7-13, after disposing of two of his compatriots on the way to the championship round.

Van Boening, who went unbeaten in the entire US$170,000 tournament, pocketed the top prize of $25,000 while Orcollo took home $15,000.

The 29-year-old Orcollo earlier ousted pool great Efren `Bata’ Reyes, 11-7, and Alex Pagulayan, 11-7, in the loser’s bracket to arrange the finals showdown with Van Boening.

The American also bested Pagulayan, 11-5, in their hot-seat match duel on the winner's side to take the first finals berth.

Pagulayan and Reyes each received $10,000 and $6,000 for finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Other Filipinos who saw action in the meet were Francisco `Django’ Bustamante, Ronato Alcano, Jose `Amang’ Parica, Warren Kiamco, Carlo Biado, Santos Sambajon, Ramon Mistica, Israel Rota, Daniel Dagotdot, and Reynaldo Campana.
