BILLIARDS was once derisively described as 'laro ng mga tambay.'

Well, Efren 'Bata'Reyes and Francisco 'Django' Bustamante, the two men mainly responsible for elevating billiards into a sport, continue to be a hero of the masses, as seen from the warm welcome they got during a visit to the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City.

Through the Jail Sports Outreach Program made possible by the Philippine Sports Commission and the NBP Sports and Recreation Office, the two billiards icons wowed inmates with their shotmaking skills in exhibition games held inside the maximum security compound.

Reyes and Bustamante played 10-ball singles and doubles against select inmates who came out winners in billiards tournaments held inside the NBP.

The two legends of the pool table also wowed the hundreds in attendance with trick shots including Reyes' famous masse shot that made it to a San Miguel Beer commercial years back.

Reyes and Bustamante also accomodated several autograph requests from the inmates.

The billiards event is one of the ongoing outreach sports programs held inside the NBP. The PSC has also been holding billiards, chess, soft tennis, and other sports clinics for the inmates for several years now.

"Para sa inyo itong programang ito dahil hindi kayo nakakalimutan ng gobyerno," PSC commissioner and project head Jolly Gomez told hundreds who witnessed the event.
