ALJON Mariano stepped up in the fourth quarter as University of Santo Tomas grabbed its second win in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup with an 83-79 win over San Sebastian on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
Mariano had 23 points for UST and scored 13 in the fourth quarter when the Tigers finally put away the pesky Stags to improve their win-loss record to an even 2-2.
“Kulang kasi kami sa offense saka sa aggressiveness. Sabi ni coach (Pido Jarencio), ikot namin ang bola, huwag mag-isolation,” Mariano said.
Jarencio said that it has been difficult to win at the Filoil tournament as the Tigers have not been able to put together a complete team in practice owing to the players’ commitments in the PBA D-League.
Jarencio himself won just his first game of the preseason with the Tigers after focusing on his job as assistant coach of Petron in the PBA.
“Mahirap manalo kasi hindi kami nabubuo sa practice,” said Jarencio.
Karim Abdul had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers while Tata Bautista added 12 points, including four three-pointerst.
The Stags, who dropped to 2-4, were led by Jaymark Perez's game-high 24 points. Jovit Dela Cruz scored 20 points and Leo Devera added 12.
