    ‘Bata’ recovers from loss in opening match to stay in the hunt in World 9-ball Championship

    Efren 'Bata' Reyes gets derailed early but steadies himself to get back on track in his bid for a second WPA 9-ball title. 

    EFREN ‘Bata’ Reyes avoided elimination after beating Denis Grabe of Estonia, 9-8, on Monday in the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Doha.

    Reyes, winner of the event in 1999, beat Grabe in the one-loss side of the bracket after ‘The Magician’ bowed to Jeong Young Hwa of South Korea, 9-5, in his first Group 9 match.

    Ramil Gallego also stayed alive on the one-loss side with a 9-7 win over Mishel Turkey of Qatar in Group 4, while Lee Van Corteza beat Mario Morra of Canada, 9-6, in Group 16. Francisco Felicida beat Christian Aguirre of Ecuador, 9-5, in the losers’ bracket of Group 12.

    In the main bracket, Jeff de Luna beat Tomasz Kaplan of Poland, 9-8, and Israel Rota won over J-Ram Alabanzas of Russia, 9-0, in Group 14.

    Johann Chua downed Corey Deuel of United States, 9-2, in Group 13, while Elmer Haya beat Corteza, 9-2, in Group 16.

    Last year’s runner-up Antonio Gabica, Dennis Orcollo, Warren Kiamco, Carlo Biado, Raymund Faraon, and Elvis Calasang won they matches in Day One of the competition on Sunday.
