Rubilen Amit had to sweat it out once again in the second round of the Women’s World 9-Ball Championships after nipping Junko Tsuchiya of Japan, 7-6, on Tuesday in another closely-fought encounter in the World 9-Ball Championships in Shenyang, China.
It was the second consecutive hill-hill victory for Amit, who beat Wu Zhiling, 7-6, in the first round of matches in Group E.
Amit will face reigning world 10-ball champion Kelly Fisher in the next round after the Briton defeated Monica Webb, 7-2, in the second round.
Meanwhile, Iris Ranola bowed to Yu Han of 7-1 to move into the losers’ bracket but defeated Charlene Chai Zeet of Singapore, 7-6, to stay alive in the tournament.
Defending champion Bi Zhu Qing remained in the hunt in Group A after downing Liu Yichen, 7-4, to set up a showdown with Chen Xue, who defeated Jing Siya, 7-3.
Fu Xiao Fang, the 2010 titlist, outclassed Lin Hsiao Chi, 7-1, in Group F but inaugural champion Liu Shasha was not as fortunate, bowing to Allison Fisher, 7-6.
Tournament format calls for a double elimination tournament in the group stage with the final 32 entering the knockout stages.
The meet has a total prize money of US$300,000 with the champion receiving US$40,000 and runner-up US$20,000.
