JOSE Rizal University downed a short-handed Adamson side on Friday, 85-77, to advance in the next round of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Abdel Poutouochi led the Heavy Bombers with double-doubles of 20 points and 17 rebounds, while adding six assists and two blocks in 33 minutes of play.
“’Yung presence niya ang hinahanap namin every game,” stressed JRU coach Vergel Meneses, referring to Poutouochi. “Sabi ko sa kanya if di siya maka-opensa he can help in rebounding and shot blocks and he did so today.”
Dave Sanchez added 17, Ervin Gorospe chipped in 12, and Paolo Pontejos contributed 10 for JRU, which improved to a 7-1 win-loss record for a berth in the quarterfinals.
Despite the win, Meneses rued on the complacency of the Heavy Bombers that almost cost them the game.
“My team got complacent. Sabi ko nga sa kanila any team can beat any team and this Adamson team is strong,” he said.
“I want them to bring their game to the next level lalo na quarterfinals na and this is our preparation for the NCAA. Kahit talo basta may matututunan,” he added.
Nico Capote finished with 17 points for Adamson, while Dawn Ochea added 13, Jd Tungcab with 12 and Joseph Nalos with 11.
African import Papi Sarr missed the game for Adamson due to a groin injury.
