THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the association with a hundred-million peso program for its men’s team, has asked the Philippine Sports Commission for help in funding its women’s squad.
SBP executive director Sonny Barrios said on Monday that a proposal will be sent to the PSC this week.
"I can't presume what PSC wil grant 2 us. We wil have 2 wait 4 board approval of PSC. Too early 2 comment," Barrios told spin.ph in a text message.
Newly appointed PSC commissioner Iggy Clavecilla said on Monday Smart Gilas II coach Chot Reyes has asked him to extend support to the Filipina cagebelles.
The women’s team obtained a private sponsor in Discovery Suites but not in the same magnitude as the men’s basketball team, which enjoys tremendous backing from private entities.
“Wala silang problema sa men’s team,” Clavecilla, who was assigned as commissioner-in-charge for basketball, said in a press briefing on Monday. “Pero ang pakiusap niya na tulungan ’yung ladies team.
“One of these days, we are going to talk with Sonny Barrios. ’Yun ang bubunuin namin.”
The Philippine team settled for the silver medal in last year's Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. Its 3-on-3 team recently captured the bronze in the Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China.
