A TOTAL of 702 players have applied for the first-ever Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) Draft.
WNBL executive vice president Rhose Montreal said the overwhelming number of hopefuls have come from all over the country and even from Filipinas living abroad with the intent of joining the first women’s professional basketball league in the country.
“Sobrang overwhelming. We at the WNBL are truly humbled with the number of applications we received,” said Montreal.
The number of applicants will still be trimmed down as the players’ credentials will be evaluated in order to make it to the Draft Combine set October 12 to 16 in Pampanga.
Players aged below 21 years old will not be allowed to join the draft.
Among the names that applied in the draft are Monique del Carmen, Raiza Palmero, April Lualhati, Jackie Tanaman, Janette Yanez, and Tina Deacon.
Former La Salle cager AJ Gloriani and Fille Claudine Cainglet, the sister of volleyball player Fille Cainglet-Cayetano who suited up for University of the Philippines during her college days, also applied in the draft along with several more players all over the country.
“This just shows that we have a lot of talent in women's basketball here in the country,” Montreal said.
The final list of names in the WNBL Draft Combine will be announced through an online show, after which a draft lottery will take place on October 18.
The draft proper will be on October 30.
Teams who are already entered in the league will be allowed to protect six players from its roster, while teams who are part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Air Force, Army, and Navy must have players that have been enlisted for a minimum of one year.
