OLIVAREZ College pulled off a pulsating 71-70 win over National University and grabbed the early lead in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League Summer Invitational on Tuesday at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
Vinny Begaso and Pruvil Bermudez led another well-balanced attack as the Sea Lions rolled to their second straight win in the event serving as a preseason tournament for several UAAP, NCAA and UCBL teams.
Begaso was a rebound short from completing a double-double after firing 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field while Bermudez chipped in 10 points.
NU’s defeat was its second in as many outings despite three players finishing in double figures.
So tight was the game that it was marked by 12 lead chances and eight deadlocks.
Centro Escolar University bounced back from an opening-game defeat with a 71-67 win over College of St. Benilde.
Patrick Aquino led CEU with 17 points while Paul Galinato and Judel Fuentes added 11 points to hand the CSB Blazers their first defeat in the tournament backed by Ever Bilena-Blackwater, Smart, Advanced Solution, Inc. and Manila Bulletin.
