CEBU CITY – Vescon Construction made it two in a row with a hard-earned 87-81 win over LM Paragsa in the 2017 Cebu City Mayors Cup Commercial Basketball Tournament on Thursday night at the Cebu City Sports Institute.
Five players reached double-figures in scoring led by the 16 points of former Adamson star Mark Abadia. Mark Ababon and Ronan Isidro had 15 each while Liberian forward Bassieru Sackour and Harold Cincoflores logged in 14 points apiece.
LM Paragsa suffered their second straight loss in the four-team competition.
The top two finishers at the end of the elimination round on Saturday will battle for the title and the P50,000 cash prize on Monday.
Thursday’s win did not come easy for the talent-stacked Vescon squad as LM Paragsa waxed hot in the first half and came away with a 31-20 lead, thanks to the hot shooting of Melvin Abala and Leo Paragsa who combined for 18 in that searing stretch.
But Vescon’s veteran savvy started to show as they slowly chipped away at the lead before eventually taking over late in the third, 65-63, after baskets from Sackour, the current reinforcement of the University of the Visayas.
LM Paragsa got within two, 77-79, after a triple by veteran guard Ope Abellana. However, Ababon and Abadia struck with consecutive transition buckets to push the lead back to six, 73-67.
Former PBA forward Danny Aying gave LM Paragsa their last hope with a fadeaway jumper but Ababon answered right back with a jumper from the keyhole area to raise the lead back to 85-79, with 1:15 remaining.
