CEBU CITY - The University of the Visayas’ prized Nigerian recruit Steve Cedric Akomo lived up to his billing as he led the Green Lancers to an 86-63 win over University of Southern Philippines Foundation in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The 6-8 Akomo put together an impressive stats line of 17 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and five shot blocks in his debut for the Lancers, who wasted no time establishing themselves as contenders for a 10th league title.
It was also Akomo who keyed the Lancers’ early breakaway, coming through with four blocks, two steals and two points right in the first period when the many-time champions opened a 22-10 lead.
Veteran forward Jerome Silva then took over as he capped an 11-1 run with back-to-back three-pointers that gave UV a 43-25 halftime lead.
The Lancers went on to lead by as much as 29 points, 64-35, after shots by Akomo and another of their blue-chip rookies, Hernan Escosio.
Silva paced UV with 21 markers.
Forward Fritz Dajalos led the Panthers with 14 points while Jam Ferraren added 11.
