UV Green Lancers edge closer to SWU rematch

Nov 13, 2012

CEBU CITY – University of the Visayas took advantage of the lackluster effort by University of San Jose-Recolletos to score a 79-55 rout on Tuesday and advance to the stepladder phase of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win put the Green Lancers within a step of earning a rematch with Southwestern University, the same team that beat them for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) title just last month.

For that to happen, the Lancers will have to first hurdle Holy Trinity College of General Santos City on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Wildcats advanced in the Southern Islands Championship tournament following their 101-77 blowout of West Negros University on Tuesday.

The Jaguars shot themselves in the foot during the third period where they went without a field goal and score just two points on two free throws. Their predicament saw them sink deeper against the fighting Lancers, 65-31, after already trailing by 19 at halftime (48-29).

Wowie Escosio, the first ever Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awardee of the Cesafi, led the way for UV with 12 points, while Raffy Octobre and Rene Saycon added 11 points each.

Renato Abing paced USJ-R with 13 even as Matthew Parker chipped in 12 markers.

Meanwhile, National University and the reigning PCCL champion San Sebastian tangle on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in an intriguing match-up featuring the showdown between the MVPs of both the UAAP and NCAA -- Bobby Ray Parks of the Bulldogs and Ian Sangalang of the Stags.
