CEBU CITY – The University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers gave the visiting Malaysia Universiti Teknologi MARA squad a sound beating, 74-35, at the start of the Asia Pacific University Games 2017, on Wednesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
USPF stumped MARA early on with a full-court trapping defense that caused a lot of turnovers, which were turned into easy and uncontested baskets by the Panthers.
The end of the first quarter saw USPF lead, 34-7, which was all they needed to cruise to the comfortable win.
Sharpshooting wingman Lyndon Colina led USPF with 19 points. All but one player tallied at least a point for the wards of head coach Albert Alocillo.
Amir Bin Roshad paced the team from Malaysia with 16 points.
The six-team pocket tournament, which also has Jiangxi Provincial Pingxiang Experimental School from China along with Cesafi teams, University of the Visayas, University of San Carlos and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, is being organized by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines.
Teams will play a single round robin with the top two finishers battling it out for the championship.
