UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos edged University of Cebu in Game Two 70-68 Wednesday to sweep the best-of-three series for third place in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Renato Abing, the player who drew the unenviable task of shadowing UC’s top gunner Brian Heruela all game long, sank the game-winner as he sneaked in and tipped in Miguel Tabaloc’s miss.
UC had one last shot at winning the game and tying the series but Robinson Mohamad missed his three-point attempt at the buzzer.
The Jaguars, who failed to score a win in the round-robin semifinals, were led by Abulaiz Suliman's 16 points, while Matthew Parker and Banjo Capilar each had 15.
Heruela had a game-high 30 points for UC.
The Jaguars appeared to be out of it as they fell behind by 19 points early in the second canto, 6-25.
But they came alive and took the lead with a 20-4 run, Banjo Capilar catching fire and sinking three three-pointers to help the Jaguars take a 49-39 lead late in the third canto.
The Webmasters regained the lead, 66-64, after two free-throws and a corner three by rookie guard Kido Cabrera with 2:35 left.
USJ-R though, was not done as Parker made a free-throw and Capilar swished the last of his five three-pointers for a 68-66 lead, 2:00 left.
The finals feature University of the Visayas and Southwestern University.
