UNIVERSITY of San Carlos and Cebu Institute of Technology advanced to the semifinals with contrasting victories on Saturday in the 2013 Enervon-Cesafi Partner’s Cup at the Cebu Coliseum.
The USC Warriors survived the 37-point explosion of University of Southern Philippines Foundation wingman Joseph Sedurifa to prevail, 93-88, in overtime.
The CIT Wildcats whipped University of San Jose-Recoletos, 81-63, with Allen Dimco scoring 18 points.
USC scored nine straight points in overtime for an 88-81 lead. The Panthers got to within three, 88-91, after an inside basket by Sedurifa with 30.1 seconds remaining, but the Warriors held on to advance.
The Warriors entered the fourth quarter leading, 64-50, but the Panthers rallied to take the lead, 67-64 with a 17-0 run led by Sedurifa, who had 11 in that stretch. The Warriors had a chance to win the game in regulation but Charles Pepito botched a wide-open jumper at the buzzer.
Stephen Que led the Warriors in scoring with 19, while Pepito added 18.
The Panthers got 17 points from Art Camello and 16 from Lawrence Escanilla.
The round robin semifinals start on Thursday with University of the Visayas and University of Cebu tangling with the USC and CIT, respectively.
