UNIVERSITY of the Philippines turned back Jose Rizal University, 75-63, on Wednesday for its first win after six losses in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
The Maroons came up with an 8-0 run, with Raul Soyud scoring five straight points and Joseph Marata burying a triple for a 68-59 advantage midway through the fourth quarter and the Diliman-based squad held on to finally make it to the win column.
"This is our first win in the Filoil and we had a lot of close games. But we charged those (games) to experience and hopefully this win could propel us to better things," said UP coach Ricky Dandan.
Marata and Soyud finished with 17 points apiece, while Julius Wong added 16 as the Fighting Maroons ended their run of futility.
"Lahat ng dinaanan namin no matter how hurtful kailangan namin pagdaanan because we are virtually a young team," said Dandan.
