SENATOR Joel Villanueva outshone Presidential special assistant Bong Go as the Senate Sentinels downed the Malacañang-Philippine Sports Commission Kamao, 78-74, at the start of the UNTV Cup Executive Face-Off held Sunday at the Pasig City Sports Center.
A UST varsity player in the early 90s, Villanueva put on a big show, scoring and creating plays as the Sentinels survived Kamao’s determined challenge.
Though he suffered cramps, Villanueva finished with 21 points while Go was held to just 15 points.
Villanueva was ably supported by Warren Tan and Sen. Sonny Angara who chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Director General Oscar Albayalde inspired Philippine National Police to a 90-62 drubbing of defending champion Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“The presence of the General was enough to inspire the PNP players. He knows his basketball very well,” said UNTV vice president Gerry Panghulan. “I’m sure they will go deep this time.”
Albayalde scored four points as PNP got off to a strong start in the tournament.
The chosen charity of the winning gets P1 million while the runner-up’s charity receives P500,000.
