UNIVERSITY of San Carlos and University of the Visayas both won two straight games at the Capiz Gym in Roxas City to take the lead in their respective divisions of the Visayas Regional Finals of the 2014 BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournaments.
In the Small Basketeers Philippines division, USC edged Ateneo de Iloilo, 31-30, in a nail-biter of a game, then trounced St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, 53-38, to gain a spot in the championship of the four-team regional finals.
In other SBP games, Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas City scored a 39-38 win over St. John’s of Bacolod. It was Purisima’s first win in the history of the Visayas Regional finals, and thus sparked a celebration for the Roxas-based team.
Ateneo de Iloilo bounced back from its loss to USC by downing Purisima, 74-27, to tie their victims at 1-1. Ateneo needs to win over St. John’s in its last game of the classification round to earn a seat in the championship game against USC.
UV and Hua Siong College of Iloilo will face each other for the Passerelle division championship of the tournament sponsored by Milo.
UV held off Bacolod side University of St. La Salle, 36-32, then cruised to a 56-21 romp over Purisima.
Hua Siong stayed on pace with the Cebuanos as they clipped USLS Bacolod, 43-36, after dumping Purisima, 62-39.
