National University spoiled what could have been a dream final in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup as they routed Ateneo, 85-68, Saturday in the semifinals at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Bobby Ray Parks finished with 30 points on 12-for 17 from the field to pace the Bulldogs, who shot 51 percent from the field as a team and hit 10 three-pointers in a runaway victory over the defending titlist.
Ateneo was fancied to face to the finals against either San Beda or La Salle - two teams with storied rivalries against the boys from Katipunan.
But NU had other ideas.
With the win, the Bulldogs stayed perfect in the preseason tournament with 10 victories in as many games.
“We had a good start. I’m proud of the boys with what I saw today. They believed in each other and they believed in themselves,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano.
“Alam naman natin na going up against Ateneo is like climbing a mountain so even though it was just a preseason game, it was a big challenge,” said Altamirano.
Jeoff Javillonar had 13 points while Denice Villamor added 12 points as they combined for four three-pointers. Emmanuel Mbe added 10 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs opened with a 25-16 blitz and found themselves up, 47-35, at the half thanks to their torrid shooting in the second period.
The lead reached 18 points when Javillonar converted a three pointer, 63-45, in the third quarter.
Greg Slaughter had 21 points, seven rebounds and three blocks while Nico Salva added 14 points for the Blue Eagles.
